What Equipment Do You need to Play Pickleball?
- Pickleball Paddles
- Pickleball Balls
- One Court
- One Net
How to Play Pickleball (Rules)?
To play Pickleball you will need a court of 20’ x 44’ that is similar to a badminton court. The game can be played as single player or double players. The first step is to serve the plastic ball diagonally and the side that served only they can get the points. The ball must be bounced once by the players of both sides before volleys are accepted. To stop “spiking” on each side of the net there is a 7’ non-volley zone. One player can continue his/her serve until he/she faults.
Serves starts with the right-hand service square and each serve is alternated. Players need to serve diagonally. A serve is called successful only when the serve clears the 7’ non-volley-zone of the net and it must land on the opposite side of the net in diagonal court.
The server needs to keep his both feet behind the back line at the time of serving and the paddle must be below the waist. The most important rule is to keep the ball in the air while hitting the ball and it can’t be bounced. Serves will be continued by the serving side until they make no-fault while serving. If there is a fault on the service then the service will go to the opposite side. We will talk about the faults later in this article so you don’t need to worry about that.
Each serve is made underhand with the paddle hitting the ball under the waist. The ball cannot be allowed to bounce while making a serve. All he serves must be made diagonally and should clear the non-volley-zone to make a successful serve. If a serve hits the non-volley zone then the serve is out. One serve attempt at a time is allowed only. A serve can be served again only if the ball touches the net and still it lands in the right service court. The first serving team can be allowed only one fault at the starting of the game. Always the player in the right-hand court will start the game no matter which team wins the serve.
The double-bounce rule is also known as the Two Bounce Rule in which each team will play their 1st shot off of the bounce. In this rule, the opposite team of serving team need to let the serve bounce once before hitting and the team that served must let the return of the serve bounce also before hitting it.
Volley refers to hit the ball without letting it bounce and also the ball needed to be hit in the air. The only rule of volley in Pickleball is that players need to keep their feet behind the non-volley zone line which is 7’ behind the net. If the player steps on the line while volley follow-through then it will be considered as a fault resulting the serve will go to the opposite side.
At the starting of the game, players need to call the lines on their side of the net and opposite team will also do the similar on their side. Opponents cannot make a call on the opposite side of the net till they are asked. If the team is unable to make choice on a line call, then the profit always moves to the opponent. A decision is made final when a team asks for an advice from the opponent.
The fault has occurred if the ball –
- Is hit out of bounds
- Touches the line of the non-volley zone while serving
- Does not go over the net
- Is volleyed from the non-volley zone
- Don’t land on the diagonal side of the court
- Is volleyed before letting it bounce once on each side
Only the serving team can score a point. A player can serve continuously until a fault is occurred by the team of his/her own. In the double play, each player of a team can keep serving until there is a fault is made by his/her team if a fault is made then the server goes to the opposite team which is called Side Out. Total 11 points need to score in this game and a team wins if it gets 2 points extra then the opponent.
